The qualities I saw—thousands of dollars in chips manically thrown onto the felt in hope that lady luck would bless them—did not portend presidential greatness. Poker champ beats the odds

A Colwood woman is enjoying long overdue lady luck. Wilma Hanicka won 000 last weekend at the Queen of Hearts poker championship in Washington State. Cheering Wilma on were her poker buddies from Greater Victoria who call themselves the Island Girls. Hanickas winning streak comes after a couple of bouts of bad luck. Her Colwood home was badly damaged in the wicked wind storm of 2006 and it burned to the ground last year. In an ironic twist, Hanicka won the jackpot exactly one year after fire destroyed her home. In spite of the hardships, Hanicka feels like a lucky woman. She and her family survived both the storm and the fire, she calls it priceless.
