It began in 2004 as part of the worldwide explosion in Texas Hold ‘em popularity. The EPT is sponsored by and part owned by PokerStars and taped by Sunset + Vine for television broadcast across Europe. In seasons 1-3, the most significant difference between the competing poker tours was the buy-in and its effect on the prize pool, with the EPT featuring buy-ins about half the size of the WPT. This changed in season 4 when the buy-in for most EPT events was increased to €8000. (Due to increased popularity and lack of space in participating casinos). At 2007 exchange rates, this is approximately equal to the US000 which is the buy-in for most WPT events. Furthermore, the final table is made up of 8 players, as opposed to the 6 player final tables popularised by the WPT. European Poker Tour 2011 Season 7 Grand Final Madrid European Poker Tour Season 7 Grand Final will, for the first time in EPT history, take place in the Spanish capital of Madrid. The showpiece event of the PokerStars EPT season will be housed in the Casino Gran Madrid from May 7-12, 2011. The announcement marks the first time that the EPT Grand Final has taken place outside Monte Carlo. EPT chief executive John Duthie explained the reasons for the change: “We wanted somewhere new, dynamic and inspiring, and just knew that Madrid would tick all the boxes for the travelling poker player, regardless of age or desires. The same familiar team will be running the event and the schedule will provide something for everyone. All the usual qualifying satellites will be held on PokerStars and other regional versions of the site, giving all players of all nationalities the opportunity to join us in launching from our new home.
